Your First Session
I like to think of the first session as a trial run. Aside from going over informed consent details, I like for you to know what to expect from the therapeutic process. Often, clients feel ready to start diving into their reasons for seeking mental health services in the first session, but it’s totally okay if you need some extra time to feel comfortable. It’s understandable to feel anxious being vulnerable in front of a stranger because that can feel very scary, which is why I like to go at your pace to build the rapport and trust for you to get to a place in which you feel ready to share.
Why I Became a Therapist
I have always wanted to have a career where I can help people, and I enjoy being of service to others. The mental health field is a way that I can help people not just reach their goals but grow, have more self-compassion, be more confident in themselves, and strengthen the relationships with the people in their lives. At the very least, I want people to know that they don’t have to do it on their own; I hope my clients feel like they can rely on me and feel supported by me.
Deep Dive: My Specialties
I have an eclectic counseling style that primarily pulls from CBT and DBT, which are approaches that focus on identifying and challenging maladaptive thoughts and developing skills to cope with unpleasant and/or distressing emotions. I help clients understand the differences between thoughts, behaviors, and emotions, as well as identify how these components interact with one another to determine what healthy changes clients would like to make. My talk therapy style is built upon a foundation of empathy and unconditional positive regard. I also have a deep appreciation for art and how creativity can be a positive and helpful force in our lives, so I’ve colored, drawn, made bracelets and candles, and played games with clients. I strive to help clients find what works for them to cope, be present, and do therapy in their own ways. I understand that feeling our emotions does not always feel great. Keeping this in mind, when I help clients with mood management, I like to work at their pace to progressively build their tolerance to difficult emotions. Additionally, I help clients identify triggers, cognitive distortions, negative core beliefs, as well as raising awareness of how their unique histories have impacted their understanding of emotions.
When I'm Not in the Office
Outside of the office, I enjoy coloring, playing Tetris, walking my dogs, baking, going on runs, watching sunsets, listening to music, exploring new coffee shops, playing board games, and watching documentaries. I like to recharge via a creative outlet, enjoying a good cup of coffee, hanging out with a loved one, and going on a walk on a trail.
