What to Expect in Our First Session

During my first session with a client, I will strive to make the client feel at home by starting to establish a therapeutic relationship with the client. We will spend some time getting to know each other. I will ask about the client’s main complaint, symptoms, medical and mental health history, family history, lifestyle, any current treatment or previous treatment. Then, we will discuss possible diagnosis, treatment recommendations such as medication, psychotherapy, and lifestyle modifications. We will review the potential benefits and risks of the treatment modalities. The goal at the end of the session is for the client have a clearer understanding of his symptoms and a personalized treatment plan. The client is also given an opportunity to ask questions and to share any concerns the client may have.
