Your First Session
I know that starting therapy can feel a little overwhelming, so my goal during the first session is to help both parents and children feel comfortable and know exactly what to expect. For children and teens, I begin by meeting with the parents and child together to discuss what brings them to therapy, review informed consent, and explain confidentiality. I make sure children and teens understand that what they share in session is private, unless there is a concern about safety that would require involving a parent or caregiver. For younger children, after our initial conversation, I introduce them to the playroom and we begin getting to know each other through play. We may explore the toys, play games, create with art materials, or read Welcome to Therapy, a child-friendly book that explains the role of therapy and helps children feel more at ease. While we spend time in the playroom, parents typically complete additional paperwork that provides helpful background information. For older children and teens, the first session also begins with a conversation involving both the teen and their parent. Afterward, teens can decide whether they would feel more comfortable meeting in the office or spending time in the playroom. Many enjoy talking while playing a game, using the sandtray, or engaging in another activity, while others prefer a more traditional talk therapy setting. My focus is on creating a welcoming, supportive environment where clients can begin building trust and feel comfortable being themselves.
Why I Became a Therapist
My passion for becoming a therapist grew from my 20 years of experience working with children and families in education. Throughout my career, I saw firsthand how emotional, behavioral, and family challenges can impact a child's success at school and at home, and I wanted to be able to support children and families on a deeper level. As a therapist, I am honored to help children, teens, and parents find hope, build on their strengths, and develop the tools they need to navigate life's challenges with confidence. I believe that every child deserves to feel understood, supported, and empowered to grow, and I am passionate about partnering with families to foster healing, resilience, and stronger relationships.
Deep Dive: My Specialties
Play Therapy allows children to express their thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a way that feels natural and comfortable when words are difficult to find. Shea uses play as a tool to help clients build coping skills, process emotions, strengthen relationships, and gain confidence while feeling safe, supported, and understood. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps children and teens understand the connection between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Shea helps clients identify positive and negative thinking patterns, develop healthy coping strategies, and build confidence as they navigate challenges at home, school, and in their relationships. Traditional talk therapy provides children and teens with a safe, supportive space to openly discuss their thoughts, feelings, relationships, and life challenges. Shea helps her clients gain insight, develop practical coping skills, and build confidence as they navigate school, family, friendships, and personal growth.
When I'm Not in the Office
When I’m not in the office, I love spending time with my family and enjoying the simple things that help me recharge. I’m married and a proud mom of two young adult children, so family time is very important to me, whether that’s sharing a meal, catching up, or just being together. I also enjoy reading and watching true crime stories, along with quiet moments to unwind, reflect, and reset so I can show up fully present for my clients. Outside of work, I find joy in staying grounded, connecting with loved ones, and making space for rest and balance in my life.
